In the late Elizabeth Putnams book, Brockways Ferry, published in 1991, she observed that from the early 1800s to 1934, this was the school children attended who lived in the Brockway School District, one of seven in Lyme. The building was also used on weekends for religious meetings and dances. Nowadays children in Lyme go to the excellent Lyme Consolidated School. The original school building is now the living room. A wonderful feature is the original arched or barrel ceiling. There is a fireplace at one end and a bay window at the other. On display while the house is on the market, is an old double school desk, a reminder of the early days in this very room. The house does sit close to the road, but except for the living room bay window, most windows look out onto fields and pastures to the north and forest to the east and south. Between this property and the pastures are two fields that will not be built on. The forested land is protected by two different conservation easements and neither will they be built on. The eat-in kitchen is bright and spacious and could be beautifully remodeled. The two full bathrooms have recently been updated. There is a very nice family room, just off the living room, which in turn opens to a spacious screened in porch - a relaxing spot from which one can view distant fields and hills. The walkout basement definitely has potential. It could be finished to create a family activity room, an office or a workshop/hobby room. There is space for a patio. For the outdoors enthusiast, this is a special location. Very near the house, you can walk in from Joshuatown Rd to Pickwicks Preserve, protected by the Lyme Land Conservation Trust. Trails lead through different protected properties, hundreds of acres. It is possible to hike on trails over to Mt Archer. With a bit of imagination, this old school house could become a charming country getaway or family home. Come see for yourself.
